CASTS NEAL BLEDSOE AND GEORGINA HAIG AS LEADS

We're going mostly sf today, starting with the news from CW's untitled MARS set series which is rounding up its cast! Georgina Haig has been set as the female lead while Neal Bledsoe will be the male lead in the series about an explorer team that arrives on Mars to join the first human colony on the planet, only to discover that their predecessors have vanished. Led by a woman whose husband is among the missing, the colonists are forced to change their mission from exploration and settlement to investigation and survival, while navigating the hostile planet and their own personal demons.

 Georgina Haig (ONCE UPON A TIME) plays Gina Nolan, the mission’s botanist, a woman who is intense, motivated and sharp, a true explorer! Magnetic Neal Bledsoe (MYSTERIES OF LAURA) plays handsome, charming, brilliant and resolute Lewis, who’s charged with selecting members of the explorer team who will follow him to the Red Planet. Meanwhile, later this summer SyFy will air  Canadian 13 episode sf series AFTERMATH  following a couple Karen and Joshua Copeland and their children Dana, Brianna and Matt, who must battle for survival after civilization comes to an apocalyptic end, triggered by massive storms, meteor strikes, earthquakes and plague – and the rise of supernatural creatures. Julie Sarah Stone, Levi Meaden, and Taylor Hickson will play the three siblings coming of age in the Apocalypse. As 'Deadline' reports Stone is Dana Copeland, the practical, sardonic and quick-witted twin with a thorough knowledge of science. Hickson is the emotional, romantic and rebellious twin, Brianna Copeland. Meaden plays Matt Copeland, the fierce competitor pushed into brutality.

Probably the main television news of the day is that young star Finn Jones, whom you mostly remember by that delight- fully gay role of his in GAME OF THRONES as Ser Loras the Knight of Flowers, will take the lead role in Netflix series adaptation of Marvel's IRON FIST! The expert of ancient martial arts, who, as 'EW' reports, at age of 9 travels with his family from New York to a lost mystical city called K’un-L’un. After some tragic twists of fate, he is adopted by the city’s ruler and taught advanced martial arts and the mystical power of the Iron Fist that gives him enhanced healing, telepathy, along with super strength and reflexes. As an adult, Rand returns to his native New York and begins a career as a superhero. DEXTER's Scott Buck will be the show runner. After Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, it will be fourth Marvel series at Netflix.

'ALIEN: COVENANT' CASTS

In movie news, the cast is being rounded up for Ridley Scott's science fiction prequel sequel ALIEN: COVENANT, the second movie in his ALIEN prequel trilogy started two years ago by PROMETHEUS! The first batch of young actors to join Michael Fassbender, who reprises his original role of android David, includes EMPIRE's superstar Jussie Smollett along with Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo (Selma) and Callie Hernandez! The movie which will take place ten years after the previous one will also have  Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride and Demián Bichir in the cast together with Australian star Alex England whom you are watching this weekend in GODS OF EGYPT! Billy Crudup is also in talks.

THE STORY
To open in cinemas October next year, ALIEN: COVENANT will follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant, travelling to a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. They discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but it actually turns out to be a dark, dangerous world. And the sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

TV news for you this Sunday, starting with the cast round up for SyFy's new epic series VAN HELSING! Kelly Overton will lead the 13 episode drama which follows Vanessa Helsing, a descendent of the Van Helsing lineage of warriors who now must lead mankind against a world controlled by vampires in the post-Rising landscape.

Jonathan Scarfe will play Axel, a career Marine with unwavering devotion and loyalty to both duty and his wards, despite years of isolation and endless vampire attacks. Christopher Heyerdahl will play Sam, a survivor of the vampire Rising, who relies on his strength and observational skills to stay alive. David Cubitt is John, another survivor of the vampire Rising, whose actions are fuelled by anger, prejudice, suspicion and fear. Paul Johansson is Dimitri, a vampire turned before the Rising, he is now the patient and calculating leader of the vampires. Tim Guinee will play Ted, a vampire foot soldier who does battle with Vanessa and conceals a tragic past. Production starts tomorrow for Fall airing.

A thrilling clip has been released today at CW showing the very first and very exciting footage from DC's WONDER WOMAN movie showing Gal Gadot as princess Diana of the Amazonians and also Chris Pine as her love interest Steve Trevor! It also shows WONDER WOMAN in some fight action and the two of them in the First World War days.

Currently in production, the movie scheduled for summer 2017 will probably have three settings from WONDER WOMAN's homeland of Themyscira, ruled by her mother Hippolyta queen of the Amazons (Connie Nielsen), to the World War One setting with Steve Trevor, and a modern day setting. Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya also star. There are also rumours that Sean Bean might be portraying the lead villain in the movie. Only a day ago first promo art has also been released for JUSTICE LEAGUE movie in which Wonder Woman will appear just a few months after in November together with Superman (Henry Cavill), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg with Green Lantern curiously missing from the photo.

Speaking of things epic, 'Deadline' reports today that Netflix will make a small screen adaptation of ALTERED CARBON sf saga turning it into futuristic cyberpunk TV series with AVATAR's Laeta Kalogridis producing. The story is set in the 25th century when the human mind has been digitized and the soul itself is transferable from one body to the next. Takeshi Kovacs, a former elite interstellar warrior known as an Envoy who has been imprisoned for 500 years, is downloaded into a future he’d tried to stop. In TV news, ABC has found their Baby for the brand new small screen remake of famous dance movie DIRTY DANCING which they will produce in the form of a three hour mini series. Abigail Breslin will take on Jennifer Grey's original role! As 'Deadline' reports, like the original, the new DIRTY DANCING centres on Baby, an innocent young woman in the early 1960’s who vacations with her affluent parents and siblings in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor.

Meanwhile, 'Deadline' also reports that Spike TV has officially ordered the ten episode sf series based on cult sf novels RED MARS by Kim Stanley Robinson that will air in January 2017 describing the colonization and terra forming of Mars into a place where humans can live sustainably! With rigorous attention to scientific detail, based on at-the-time current science and speculative science, the three novels had the large cast of widely different and richly detailed characters followed over the course of decades and centuries, as well as the somewhat utopian social and political ideals the novels explore.

Over at the British Isles, ITV has revealed the first look from their new historical series HOUDINI & DOYLE, revealing Stephen Mangan as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Michael Weston as Harry Houdini. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the ten part TV drama will explore the duo's friendship and how they, the creator of Sherlock Holmes and one of world's most famous illusionists,  worked with New Scotland Yard on unsolved crimes. In the story created by himself, Tom Hardy plays James Keziah Delaney who returns to 1814 London after 10 years in Africa to discover that he has been left a mysterious legacy by his father. Driven to wage war on those who have wronged him, Delaney finds himself in a face-off against the East India Company, whilst playing a dangerous game between two warring nations – Britain and America. Michael Kelly will be American doctor Dumbarton, Jonathan Pryce is Sir Stuart Strange, the head of the East India Company and Delaney’s nemesis, Oona Chaplin is Delaney’s half-sister while David Hayman will be his trusted man-servant.

At the same time, Netflix is planning to reboot LOST IN SPACE TV series, this time a more grounded sf saga about a young family of space explorers who get lost in the galaxy and encounter strange alien lifeforms while trying to overcome insurmountable odds. Disney has revealed the first trailer for their fairy tale movie ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS which is out next May! Alice (Mia Wasikowska) has spent the past few years following in her father's footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit, Absolem, the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Anne Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends - and enemies - at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out.  Helena Bonham Carter, Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman and Michael Sheen also star.

EPIC FANTASY NOVELS TO BECOME BBC MINI SERIES 

TV news today, starting with the super exciting ones coming from BBC who will turn Philip Pullman's epic fantasy novels HIS DARK MATERIALS into TV series. The story, already adapted into GOLDEN COMPASS movie eight years ago, follows two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, as they travel through various parallel universes and meet a host of fantastical creatures including witches and armoured polar bears.

'VAN HELSING' SYFY SERIES

Meanwhile, after closing down DOMINION and DEFIANCE, SyFy will fill the empty space with new VAN HELSING series! Coming from Neil LaBute, the story will, unlike the brilliant movie with Hugh Jackman, have a female hero! It will be told from the point of view of Dr Abraham Van Helsing's daughter Vanessa Helsing, who is resurrected five years into the future after a long sleep in the world that has been overrun by vampires, leaving Vanessa Helsing as the last hope for humanity's survival. The 13 episodes will be filmed in Canada to air Fall 2016!
